The lone Purple Yoshi.... Ever wondered why there were rumors of being able to experience the adventure with the Purple Yoshi in Yoshi's Story? Ever wondered why that Purple Yoshi never was seen again since it was part of the curse of the story book? Well... That Purple Yoshi escaped the turmoil after the Yoshies saved the Super Happy Tree but after she was back to normal, she never reunited with her friends and family. From the very beginning, the Purple Yoshi was different, very different. She never dreamed of being a fruit eater. She instead wanted to eat vegetables. She knew she didn't belong with the other Yoshies because all they wanted to do was eat eat EAT. One day she came across a Super Happy Fruit and saw some Yoshies recklessly playing with it as they tend to do before they eat any fruit. The Purple Yoshi saved the Super Happy Fruit and took it with her. Then she gave it a band aid and sang in her yoshi language the most beautiful song that was ever heard by a Yoshi. The Purple Yoshi promised to care for the Super Happy Fruit as long as she could thus making the Super Happy Fruit the happiest it has ever been. Even though they had no others to care for them, them only having each other was good enough to them. THE END~
That isn't the REAL reason why the Purple Yoshi wasn't playable in Yoshi's Story, but I had to come up with an interesting take behind the story to present this pic that you are looking at right now. Purple Yoshi has always been one of my favorite Yoshi colors next to Red, both Blue Yoshies, White and Green. Made me sad that they never made it playable. Anyways, enjoy and
Happy Spirit Day!

The interesting fact that first started the rumours about there being playable purple and brown yoshis is that they actually used to be playable characters, under an early stage of the game's development ! This was revealed in a promotional video teaser from 1997, I think, which displayed a short clip of the yoshi select screen displaying both. However, amongst the eight yoshis displayed, the pink and white yoshis were not present, but the black one was. So it turns out they removed both, added a white yoshi, and made the two colourless dinos unlockable.
On that note, though, the purple and brown yoshis are actually not entirely absent from the game. If you watch the prelude, you can see them being portrayed as the deceased ancestors of the playable baby yoshis of the game.
